"Where, Joy and Learning go Hand in Hand"
Manipulatives
Children need opportunities to work alone, one on one with a teacher,
or with one other child. Manipulatives or as some call them, table
toys, give children opportunities for these types of interactions.
Table toys are games, manipulatives, puzzles, and class collections
that children can play with at a table or on the floor, alone or with a
friend or a teacher. The texture, color, and shape of table toys
offer children challenging opportunities to learn new skills and to
grow in all areas of development. Children will develop self-
confidence as they experience the satisfaction of completing a
puzzle or other self-correcting toy successfully. As they share or
take turns playing a game or building an intricate design, children will
begin learning the skill of cooperating with one another. Table toy
play also offers many opportunities for children to experiment with
construction and invention, problem solving, eye-hand coordination,
and small muscle skill refinement. This type of play also provides
practice in ordering, matching, and classifying-important skills for
    mathematics.
